Joonas Widenius
Finland
Приєднався 18 бер 2007
Neither with his platinum blond hair and his pale skin nor with his Finnish origin, Joonas Widenius evokes the idea
of being one of Europe's most interesting famenco jazz guitarists nowadays. However, he is - and he is a wonderful
example how many young European musicians think, live and work meanwhile they create the soundtrack of
today's Europe, and today's globalized world.
Widenius was born in 1980 in Tornio in Northern Finnland, and he still loves the solitude and nature of Lapland
where he often spends time to get inspiration for new music. His melodies are very often simple as children's songs,
sometimes a bit melancholic but easy to be listened - and to be loved. But instead of just following his northern
roots and putting those tradition-inspired tunes into a new contemporary livery, Widenius does something pretty
unexpected: He uses technique and styles of Spanish famenco to ride on his nordic melodies whereby he created a
new style.

How do you travel with your guitar by plane?
My question is - how can I get as cool as you, Joonas? :)
Hah! Be yourself :-) Thats' cool.
@@JoonasWideniusOfficial - esoooo!
Hi Joonas! I've been learning some simpler flamenco pieces (for example Juan Martin) to understand the basic techniques of flamenco. So, I've gained basic knowledge of bulerias, solea, alegrias etc. But one thing I really struggle with is trying to compose something of my own since flamenco music differs a lot from western style of phrasing and such. As a person not born to the flamenco culture, do you have any tips on how to compose own music that sounds flamenco and not just noodling in Phrygian mode? Ps. Terveisiä Suomesta!
Good question and I'll answer you in the next video.
How to get rid of tension while playing ? and how to know if I am setting the correct posture? thanks
Can describe a bit more, so do you mean tension in hands, or shoulders, or overall? Just a little bit more about this issue would help me to answer precisely.
Is there a shortcut to learning the style and the material, meaning the songs and singing styles or does one need to immerse in the culture and step by step familiarize with material. Or could one accompany a singer or be a solo performer without this knowledge? What would a fakebook of flamenco consist of?
Thanks, you'll get an answer in next video.
The one and only Moraito :)
Hi Joonas, another cool idea from you :) I'm still visiting Sevilla as much as possible and am now happy sitting outside cafe Central in Alameda and playing along with friends. (progress 😃 ) Teachers in Sevilla seem to like to add a certain amount of "mystery" to their lessons and Flamenco as a whole, meaning a lot of clever inversions, fills, alt chords etc. I can understand that some phrases are extended or contracted depending on the mood of the singer, but does the general progression remain the same, meaning: Is it possible to play Bulerias Letras with a common (basic) chord progression, whilst adjusting the length of phrases according to the singer? (It may sound boring and mechanical but will seriously help when I am totally lost 😩 )
Good question! I'll answer this in the next video.
Great ❤
Cheers!
Muy bueno !!! OLEEEE !!! Muy buen compas.
Joonas, How can I purchase it in U.S. of America ?
Hi there! You can buy it from Global Music Centre. There've been some orders to US and Canada, so it shouldn't be any problem. Postal costs are a bit higher of course, but if you want, you can also download a digital version. You will find both here: globalmusic.fi/en/shop
Thanks Joonas, Nice instructional and theory book, I will purchase one !! Good Job, Stay out there for us.
the best❤❤❤❤
Perfect ❤❤
🙏
Excellent stuff Joonas! More people should be subscribed to you!
Thank you!
❤👍🏼
This book is beyond awesome and is exactly what I have been looking for quite some time. I love how it progressively goes from extremely basic level to some pretty advanced stuff. Thanks for including Fandangos...I love that Palo!
Thank you so much!
Your channel is a great treasure for finding great falsetas! Please continue posting!
Thanks! I'll when more freetime 🙂
I really love this book. Will it be any Vol 2?
Thank you very much! Yes, there will be at least Vol 2 and 3 and maybe more. Contents will change a bit but the ideas and structures etc. will be the same.
Joonas rocks ! I’m learning flamenco right now ala Juan Martin’s book and the buleria is what I am currently learning …and this is how I want my buleria to sound ! Thanks from North Carolina
Thank you! Keep on practising and you'll succeed!
A bit unrelated Joonas but I kinda dig that thing that you're wearing on your head. What's it called? I wanna try it out!
No problem 🙂 It's just a tubescarve, and these kind of models you can see for example here: valhyr.com/collections/apparel/tubescarf
Joonas! Thank you so much! I have been taking private flamenco lessons for the last two years and I've learned more in the last 2 weeks from watching your videos. You are an excellent teacher. I finally understand how things fit together and your technique is very clear. I'm looking forward to getting to the next level with your help. Keep it coming!
Thank you so much for the feedback! I'm happy I can help you. By the way, if you're interested I just released a new compás book last January where is over 100 compás figures for 12 different palos. With videos of course. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/VtOyhxu-t_g/v-deo.html
His book is great... Ive been playing for about 2 years too and I understand compas way more now. The progression of the book helps you to learn how to keep time better and as you learn to play the simpler ones in time, you just move on to the harder more complex ones. Ive been to a few flamenco events recently and its shown me that is you dont have the compas down you really dont have anything if you want to play with other people. :-)
@@ericknudten7272 Thank you!
@@JoonasWideniusOfficial Sure thing..not in a million years did I ever think I would be able to play a Bulerias rhythm at 175 BPM but I am doing it.....i hope you put out more stuff in the future.
Switching to classical right hand techniques doesn't feel weird since you're a flamenco guitarist?
I'm not playing here. I am the composer and the player is a Finnish classical player Janne Malinen. So that's why there's no problems with the technical issues 🙂
Arsa!
The Alzapua with the thumb I've learned in Buleria years ago from my teacher - was so hard to learn the Alzapua
I know well. It takes really long to master.
does fandango have yamada?
Yes, but chord progressions are not so "obivous" compared to for example tangos or bulerías.
I received mail from finland today and received the book😍✊🏻
Great! Hope you like it! By the way I'm coming to Germany to play solo concerts this fall. I'll release concert calendar soon via social media.
I have it Joonas😎 Of course it's been a while since my last post here, but due to life circumstances (work, building a house and family) I only have limited time, unfortunately. In my free time I dedicate myself to instrument making and learning your excellent tutorials. I admit, I'm not one of those guitarists who finds everything easy and has to practice hard for it. Of course, I've now acquired the skills and techniques that make a lot of things easy for me, but I'm still having a hard time gnawing on your pieces. It's even nicer when I can do it. Modern Saga is another piece of yours that I would like to learn...but it's really difficult 😂 Next week we're going to Sweden in the motorhome and of course the guitar and amplifier are with us for effective learning and nice evenings around campfires with new people 😊🙏🏻 And I've kicked Spotify out of my workstation and changed to TIDAL, because the Spotify quality is catastrophic😂
Sorry for the late answer. Cheers to you! Btw I'm coming to Germany to play solo concerts in October. I'll post more about them in the near future.
@@JoonasWideniusOfficial Great 😍
Ha, well it's just over a week using this book now and I give it top marks!!! Excellent! I'm studying Tangos from the beginning and the book starts with REALLY easy compas 1. So I drilled that in and repeated it so I could play it without thinking. Did the same with compas 2 & 3 and then on to the first Remate. Seems to be working :-) The videos are an essential help too and love the option for the slower versions. When I hear Joonas play an "odd timing" to my ears I can go to the slow version and watch carefully. A-haa! Got it. This book is a must have for any flamenco guitar student in my opinion. I'm looking forward to getting into the more difficult compas as I get these simple ones learned. Thanks you Joonas for providing such an excellent and essential study book. I couldn't afford the P&P for the hard copy so I got the download... I simply write out the tab by hand so I'm not having to look at a screen all the time and that suits my style of learning. Hopefully when volume 2 is released I'll have more money for the physical copy 🙂
Thank you! I really appreciate your feedback. It's important to know how people feel about the material so I can develop it more in the future when next volumes are coming.
Richtig richtig genial👌🏼🔥 wurdest mir von Micha aus Deutschland empfohlen😎
Danke schön!
No, kultaseni, tilasin juuri kirjan.
Cheers! Thank you for the message and your order and support! First I was thinking that now this is a bit weird text, but when you said "Google-translated" I understood the case 😄Google still doesn't translate Finnish well ,heh!
@@JoonasWideniusOfficial the same with german 😂
I have just ordered it. Thank you so much for all those things you shared with us it was really helpful. All the best 😊
Thank you so much for the support!
I'd prefer the hard copy, an actual book but with nearly £14 postage on top of the price of the book I can't afford that 😞 So I'll have to go for the digital download which is unfortunate as I hate on screen tab.
Thank you for your support! I know that it can be quite expensive to order the hard copy. Of course depends on where do you live but there's no choice for the publishing company. It's the postal costs that order prices. Luckily we have the digital format like you said.
I just ordered your book. As a side note, I was watching a documentary about the people in and around the two families of the Gypsy Kings. There was a very young girl dancing and a young boy on the guitar. She stopped and said: "Just play the compas." Yes, it is that important.
3 rules for flamenco guitar: stay in compás, stay in compas and stay in compás 🙂
Ole!
Excellent stuff sir.
Thank you so much!
Brilliant! Going to try to learn this... probably next year. Its mood reminded me a little of "If I Had A Heart" from the TV series Vikings... But not as dark.
Cheers!
this is a magical solea, gut wrenching with passion this is real Flamenco. Fantastic work Joonas
Cheers!
For the record, there is only one pick-up in this guitar - the piezzo under the saddle. There is not another physical microphone as he says at 1:35. The other "mic" is a sampled sound that is contained within the electronics of the pre-amp.
Thank you for correcting the mistake.
When I close my eyes I hear the virtuosity of Diego Del Morao, clear bright and understandable to the modern heart of Jerez. Brilliant and soul moving...thank you for this gift of soul, sound and the ultimate expression on 6 strings.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for the hard work you put in to let me hear such heavenly tunes ❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
My God!! this was by far the craziest thing I've heard from you !
Cheers!
Tangos a compass
Cool sounds ,dynamics and emotions vao... you may be a satisfied man... I may ask the type of the microphone on the guitar. I guess this goes into the effects. ( from fanatic Hungary )
Cheers! Mic is Audio Technica ATM350 with Gtr adapter and it goes to myamp AER Compact 60s and from there straight to PA system. No effects or anything, except reverb and EQ.
Just ordered your new book, can't wait to start relearning (over 20 year) as I have played and taken lessons in Spain, too many teachers and some confusion. I really like your modern yet traditional style of playing. Be well my friend. James from Canada
Thank you!
Was nice to see you at the Helsinki Tonefest '24!
Thanks!
Ive been lingering on pressing the button to buy this guitar, your test inspired me and persuaded me to buy it. Subscribed!
Cheers!
